Renaissance Wedding Gowns

Despite what people may think, brides have not always worn white.  In fact, hundreds, if not thousands of years ago, brides of the day wore brightly colored wedding dresses in green, blur and even ruby red.  These colour choices, similar to the colors often found in renaissance wedding gowns now, were used to symbolize the bride’s joy and happiness at her impending nuptials.

Wearing a white wedding dress in western cultures, did not become a popular fashion statement until the day that Queen Victoria wore a white wedding dress on her big day.  She wore what in what was though to be a symbol of her status. Renaissance wedding gowns – like the styles many brides opt for now – were popular right up until this very day of Queen Victoria’s wedding, and no one ever thought any different.   Indeed, the white that is worn now, was not considered to be pure and virginal until the western churches placed this value on them.

As a result of this, you should feel free to in fact wear any colour dress you like, on your big day.  If you love the thought of wearing a splash of colour or making a bold, grand entrance, then these wedding gowns might well be your gowns of choice as they allow you to offer more of your character and personality than a standard white or cream dress can allow.

Sometimes brides who opt to wear these wedding gowns for themselves or their bridesmaids, often choose to theme their entire wedding around the dresses themselves.  This can be a fun way to jazz up what otherwise what might be a standard, traditional affair.  Do some reading either in books or on the internet about the kinds of traditions and festivities that were held during their renaissance period and consider adding some of these ideas to your day.
