Edwardian Wedding Dresses

Edwardian wedding dresses transform you to an ancient world of laces, satins, silks and ribbons. They were usually gowns adorned with beautiful embroideries, and coupled with fabulous hats and pretty shoes that invariably transformed the bride to an epitome of beauty and innocence.

Significance of colors in Edwardian wedding dresses

The wedding dresses were usually silvery, cream, pure white, pink, green or blue in color and suited all types of complexion. The fabric was made of silk, satin, and laces completed with velvet ribbon trimmings. While white and cream color symbolized purity, innocence and virginity, blue symbolized peace, green and red symbolized fertility and pink symbolized loyalty and devotion.

Bodice of Edwardian wedding dress

The fabrics of the wedding dresses were so elegant that it felt soft and luxurious to touch. The bodice had six to seven covered buttons in colorful shades and the neck was in V shape with lace bordering the neckline. The sleeves were either puffed or full at cuffs with 2 rows of elegant silk tassels and lace trimmings. The brocade often contained a shimmering silvery glow and a bodice decorated with silk rosettes and large rosette nestled in lace trimmings sweeping down the shoulders looked simply splendid on the bride.

Skirt of Edwardian wedding dress

The skirt was also made of rich satin and silk fabric with rows of tucks in front and back that formed poufs with a rosette at each one on both sides. While the hem was made of rich laces, the underside of the skirt hem was strengthened with cotton tapes to make them intact and protect them from soil exposure. The cummerbund belt made of rich satin or silk was optional for brides. The gowns were always tightly fitted on the waist and flowed out to fluffy cuts.

Other accessories of these wedding dresses

The other accessories of these wedding dresses included gloves, wedding veils with headpiece, stockings, shoes and purses. The color of the wedding veils were similar to the lace trimmings of the gowns and had white wax flowers stitched on it. The wedding veil also had a cap-like net hanging down to partially cover the face of the bride. The gloves of the wedding dresses were usually made of silk and satins with tender feather touch feeling.

The wedding dress also contained hats instead of the veil. The hats were usually made of black chiffon, black palette sequins with silk petals, straw toque hat with fluffy ostrich feathers and pretty silk roses, and stuffed with fresh and real pink and white roses and also tiny off-white rose buds. A colorful marble-like hatpin was usually attached to add to the charm of the hats. While the stocking were made of silk the shoes were high heeled or stilettos with sequins work on them.

The bags or purses carried along with the wedding dresses were made of rich fabric with colorful beads, sequins and wedding bells embroidered on its surface. The handle was usually short and trimmed with silks and laces.

The Edwardian style wedding dresses with high lace collars, rear zippers, net sleeves, cuffs with velvet ribbons and pearl buttons with hippie sash tie backs, Edwardian bodice ruffles and vining foliage truly made the brides of 1870s and 1890s look pretty, charming and exquisitely beautiful.
